ARIS Hosts the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival by MISE Foundation

Aug 20, 2018

On Saturday 18th August 2018, the ARIS Secondary Maths Department hosted the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival by MISE Foundation.

If you are not familiar with MISE Foundation, you might be familiar with a couple of our students, Mohammad, Abrahim and Zeynep. Mohammad was one of the chosen Math Olympiads to represent Ghana at the International Math Olympiad, Abrahim was the 3rd in the MISE Research Programme qualifiers and Zeynep “blazed the trail” for Girls in Math, Computer Science and Robotics (see article).

MISE Foundation is an academic enrichment program that identifies, prepares and connects gifted Mathematician youths to world-class educational opportunities to develop their full potential. This year, the Julia Robinson Math Festival was held at ARIS, and our ARIS Maths Department with the MISE Team made it a raging success!

It was a houseful with a majority of students from Upper Primary to Secondary School coming from Al-Rayan International School, and also students from Lincoln Community School, Queensland International School, Ghana Christian High School and more. Our 3 students, who have previously taken part in MISE Foundation programmes, and also the Ghana Math Olympiad from Ghana Christian High School came and took part in the event.

There were tables set up for a multitude of activities from Game of 15, to the Game of 24, to Color Triangles, to Magic Squares, to Shapometry so that every student could take part in various activities. Students were engrossed in the activities set up, and so were MISE Trainors and ARIS Math Facilitators too who not only were there to guide on strategies, but also participate and learn alongside the students. The fun of collaboration among a diverse group of learners was evident throughout!

It is also thanks to the resources, games and activities by the company – ThinkFun, that such a diverse group of learners could engage and take part and learn at the Julia Robinson Math Festival.

All in all, it was a success thanks to the committed team from MISE Foundation and the ARIS Maths Department who made this event a reality, and stayed through and guided young minds. Let’s all continue to Inspire, Empower and Transform our young minds to think outside the box!
