Mrs Alpana Mukherjee, Head of Secondary School at Al-Rayan International School (ARIS), has been at the helm of the secondary school since January 2017. She joined ARIS as the “Director of Studies and ICT Integration” at the beginning of the Academic Year in 2016. To her role, Alpana brings in over 30 years of rich teaching and administrative experience spanning across the education sectors in India and East Africa.
In just four years at ARIS, Alpana has been a catalyst in implementing the three International Baccalaureate programs in secondary school. While successfully running the IB Diploma Program (IBDP), she led ARIS through the IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP), and most recently the IB Career-related Programme authorization and implementation process. Under her leadership, ARIS has become the first IB World School in Sub-Saharan Africa to offer all 4 IB Programmes, three of which are offered in the Secondary school.
Most notable in her repertoire is a fully virtual IBCP authorization in May 2020; Alpana is the Architect of Online Virtual Verification Visit of IBO to successfully get the IBCP Authorization during the time of COVID-19.
In her 5 years at ARIS, she has been working on ICT Integration in teaching and learning, new approaches to inclusive education, and bringing student agency to the forefront in teaching and learning. She is leading the ARIS Virtual Learning Platform that has been actively running online classrooms to ensure continuity in the curriculum and no learning loss for each student. Currently, she is developing an effective and sustainable model leveraging positive pedagogical strategies for her team. This learning model mainly focuses on linking organizational mission, core values and learning principles and personalized learning with online teaching and learning.
Alpana has attended numerous training programs. Her most recent training workshops were on ‘Effective School Leadership’ and ‘Supervision and Evaluation’ from International Principal Training Centre (PTC) in Rome and London, respectively.
She is highly trained as an ‘Instructional Coach’ from the International Standard of Technical Education (ISTE). She has also received intensive training as a ‘Change Agent’ on ICT and Pedagogical development in Teaching and Learning to create and empower 21st Century Learners. This training, in particular, was sponsored by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and Stockholm University in Sweden.
With several years of experience of IBDP Coordination, IBDP Examiner and actively working as a Consultant with IB School Service Department, Alpana brings extensive knowledge and experience as an IB Educator.
Before joining ARIS, she worked as a High School Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Innovation at Green Hills Academy (GHA), an IB World School offering the IBDP, in Kigali, Rwanda for 17 years. During her tenure at GHA, and under her leadership, the school became a Cambridge International School in 2001, and received IBDP authorization in 2009, making it the first school in Rwanda to offer an IB Programme. In 2009, GHA also received the Pasch School Authorization by the Goethe Institute to teach the German Language. Like so, she has established various language-based exchange programs with schools across Europe, North America and Kenya.
In her early teaching career in New Delhi, India, she received the “Best Science Teacher” Award for her project on “Science and Society” with school children.
Alpana holds a Masters Degree in Botany with specialization in the disciplines of Physiology and Biochemistry. In her Bachelors in Science, she majored in Biology and also holds a Bachelor of Education.
Alpana’s motto is ‘education for all’, and every one is unique. Her goal is to continue to support students, colleagues and peers to be the best that they can be.
She is married with two children.
An outgoing person, and an avid reader, she is also a music lover, singer and traveller.
