Counting Counters - Numeracy Integration - Reception

Sep 14, 2018

Numeracy Integration is vital across the PYP Curriculum. In our Early Years, Numeracy Integration is done through fun and collaborative activities, like measuring a friend’s height using paper clips and blocks.

Our Reception class are now learning about Units and Quantities. Through the Counting Counters Resources (as shown in the pictures), students are grouping counters under specific numbers. For example, the number 5 has five chips under it, to visually count it.

This helps children to work on their numeral identification skills – from one to one correspondence of each object representing one more to pattern recognition to sorting to quantities.

The hands-on learning experience sets the foundation for more advanced math concepts to learn in the future like addition, subtraction and in the longer term, division and multiplication. Overall, boosting the child’s confidence, as numeracy is also an essential life-skill!
